Simple and Brief Diagnostic Criteria For Diagnosis of Coronavirus Infection (COVID-19):
I designed this simple and brief diagnostic criteria for diagnosis of Coronavirus infection (COVID-19) which depend on a clinical, laboratory and radiological criteria in addition to the real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction test (real time rt PCR) for novel coronavirus RNA to help us in our daily medical practice termed fighting against coronavirus diagnostic criteria and according to this criteria we can diagnose coronavirus infection (COVID-19) according to the followings:
1. if a patient has a sudden onset of high grade fever, dry cough or shortness of breath with no other aetiology to explain the symptoms.
2. if any person has a history of travel or residence in a location reporting high degree of local or community transmission in the previous two weeks.
3. if any person have been in a close unprotected contact with a COVID-19 patient in the previous two weeks.
4. if a patient has leukocytosis, leukopenia, lymphopenia, neutrphilia or thrombocytopenia in a compete blood count (CBC) and has a high inflammatory markers (like ESR or CRP) with no other aetiology to explain the findings.
5. if a patient has a bilateral air space consolidation in the chest X-ray (CXR) or has bilateral ground glass opacities in the CT chest with no other aetiology to explain the findings.
Any one of the above criteria is an indication to request a real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real time rt PCR) test for novel coronavirus RNA in a sample preferably taken from the nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal secreations and if it is positive we can diagnose a coronavirus infection (COVID-19), but we should bear in mind that the intial test can be negative so a second test need to be done in a suspected cases.
